Top Five Wednesday: Favorite LGBTQ Reads

Talk about your favorite books that feature LGBTQ+ characters or are by LGBTQ+ authors.

When I started this post, I thought I had never read an LGBTQ+ book and was so disappointed in myself. It’s so easy to contain yourself to one pocket of literature and not branch out… I don’t want to live in a box! (Insert Out of the Box theme song here)

After some frantic research, I realized that I actually have read books by LGBTQ authors. To name a few, In Cold Blood by Truman Capote, A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams, andΒ The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde. However, instead of just listing these books, I’m going to do a TBR because reading is knowledge and knowledge is power and power is pizza.

Simon Vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

19547856

From the rave reviews across the internet, I can already tell I’m going to love this. One reviewer said it sparked a need to bake cookies and listen to 90’s boy band music, which I can’t say no to.

Everything Leads to You by Nina LaCour

18667779

First of all, I love this cover. Second of all, the main character works in film production, which (surprise!) is my current area of work as well. I’ve heard great things about this book, and I can’t wait to dive in!

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz

12000020

Another TBR book brought to you by cover porn. Reading the title, my first impression is that this book has underlying themes of philosophy (my least favorite subject in college, FYI.) However, judging by the synopsis it seems pretty YA to me. Can’t wait to read it!

History is All You Left Me by Adam Silvera

25014114

This one is a little heavier because it deals with death and life after death. However, it sounds like such a beautiful story. I’ve heard amazing things about Adam Silvera’s writing and I can’t wait to finally read his work!

I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson

20820994

I didn’t even realize that this was an LGBTQ book when I first heard of it. Now that I’m reading the synopsis, I’m like “duh..” This is a book that has been on my TBR for a while, but I’m even more excited to read it now! Plus, the cover is gorgeous.

I feel like Simon, Ari & Dante and History made it on so many people’s lists! Two of them also made their way onto my list!

I honestly feel like I need to re-read I’ll Give You The Sun at some point because I’m pretty sure I missed on the sexuality aspect of it too. Or at least I don’t remember anything about it from when I read the book? When I was looking through Goodreads for books featuring LGBT+ characters I was honestly surprised to find this one on there!
